Every organisation lives between where it is and where it wants to be.

Ironbark — a fictional, composite essential-services organisation — has a clear aspiration and a lived reality, and a distance between them. That distance is the gap. Closing it is the whole task, and it’s a human distance first: felt long before it’s fixed.

Reality · as lived

What’s experienced

  • Employee experience — effort not always seen, heard or acted on; problems that re-surface rather than resolve at source; ownership sitting at the centre, not the line.
  • Customer experience — service that varies site to site; the promise not always met at the front line; pockets of excellence, unevenly shared.
  • The culture in between — what people actually do when no one is watching: the distance between the values on the wall and the behaviours in the corridor.
The Gap
where stated intent meets daily reality
Aspiration · who we want to become

What’s written

  • Purpose — why the organisation exists, beyond the service it runs.
  • Vision — where it is going; the future worth the effort.
  • Strategy — how it gets there: the stated choices and priorities (safety, growth, integration, service).
  • Reputation — how it wants to be known by staff, customers and community.
  • Values & behaviours — the underlying values, and the behaviours that would make the aspiration real: not slogans, but how people would actually act.
The response · the bridge

The gap is human. The bridge that closes it is mine.

What closes the gap is a way of working: my Strategic Partnering Approach, sitting at the bridge — reading the gap through four frames and three human questions. It works with whatever operating model an organisation already runs — one input, held with respect, not the centre. The centre is the gap. Here, that model is Ironbark’s: a six-element, lean-focused one — and the approach turns it until the human answers move to yes.

Respect & recognition“Do I matter?”Effort isn’t always seen or acted on; excellence gets pocketed.

The bridge · my Strategic Partnering Approach

Four frames work the operating model. Three questions decide if it turns.

The frames give breadth — nothing important missed. The questions give depth — the human reason the model is lived, not laminated.

Beneath every frame, the three human questions. Answer “yes” and the operating model becomes a way of working; answer “no” and it’s ritual on a board.

This is Ironbark’s operating model — a six-element, lean-focused example. Another organisation’s would look different; the approach is the constant. And any model only closes the gap when it’s genuinely lived — making that happen is the bridge’s whole job.

We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are. The gap is a perception gap first — which is why the approach changes what people can see, not just what the model does. As We Are →
